MockUp consists of new works by Asha Schechter. It centers on seemingly banal images culled from LA street signs. Re-worked into large C-Prints or glass sculptures, the repetition of these images speaks to circulation and context. Photographed, scanned and then integrated into three-dimensional sculptures and a newspaper, the images exceed their original semiotic function. They are equipment and autonomous things. MockUp's layout changes and allows the different pieces to interact, overlap and frame each other, disturbing the distinctions between singular instance and overall exhibition. This project was made for Praxis, Artium's program for emerging artists. The literal emphasis on "doing" also provided the inspiration for MockUp to explore the deployment and action of visual imagery. On February 25, the gallery hosted a live conference call between Aimar Arriola and Asha Schechter.
